A conceptual and methodological renewal is needed in the field of formation, transformation and management of the built environment. This need also concerns the architectural heritage, a non-renewable resource threatened by various types of risk factors, including abandonment. The transformation dynamics of the ancient towns are completely changing the urban landscape of the historical countries in Italy in the last fifty years. The most superficial part of material constitutes the image of the architectures and plays a meaningful role in the perception of the historical districts that still characterize the contemporary city, but the aptitude for destroying architectural finishes and deleting superficial patina involves therefore to alter the character of the old towns irreversibly. Il contributo propone una riflessione progettuale, elaborata durante il workshop internazionale “Hong Kong – Palermo. Fluid cities”, sulla rigenerazione del waterfront centrale della città di Palermo, approfondendo l’area dell’antico quartiere della Kalsa. Come una membrana porosa, tramite osmosi, il progetto contaminerà la città generando nuovi cluster culturali: il ‘Cultural Hub’ (l’epicentro); il ‘Food Cultural District’ (la Vucciria); il ‘Living Lab/Residenza per artisti’ (l’attuale Palazzo delle Finanze).
